In a collaborative effort between the Barbier-Mueller Museum, Geneva, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this publication and the exhibition it accompanies provide an overview of thirty-seven masterpieces of African and Oceanic art from the Barbier-Mueller collection. The catalogue entries, written by a range of specialists, describe the stylistic and contextual history of each work, and three introductory essays by members of the curatorial staff of the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas at the Metropolitan Museum explore their significance as part of an ongoing legacy of Western connoiseurship and collecting.
