Cet ouvrage présente en plus des pièces majeures de l'art du bassin des Volta, une importante série de photos de terrain. Christopher Roy a rédigé le texte sur la base de sa thèse de doctorat Ph D (Université d'Indiana) et des quinze années qu'il a consacrées à l'étude des arts de cette région.  
"Art of the Upper Volta Rivers" ne prétend pas être une étude exhaustive et définitive de l'art du Burkina Faso. Le but de l'auteur est de réaliser une analyse comparative des styles des peuples qui ont forgé l'histoire de l'art dans le bassin des Volta. Il centre son étude sur les Mossi et les gurunsi. Les Bwa et Bobo sont inclus en raison de leurs relations, et les Tuysan parce que beaucoup de sculptures leur sont attribuées bien qu'ils soient peu connus. 

This publication presents both photographs of major works of art from the basin of the Volta Rivers, and an important series of field photographs. Christopher Roy has written a text that is based on his PhD dissertation (Indiana University), and on the fifteen years he has devoted to the study of the art of the area.
"Art of the Upper Volta Rivers" is not intended to be a comprehensive or a definitive study of the art of Burkina Faso. This is a cross-cultural study of the art of the groups who have shaped the history of art in the upper basin of the Volta River. The author focused on the Mossi and the gurunsi. The Bobo are included because of their relationship to the Bwa. The Tusyâ are included because so much important sculpture has been attributed to the Tuysâ and so little was known about them.
