Chinese snuff bottles are intriguing works of art, wether featuring a superbly carved branch of blossoming plum, a poetic landscape painting, or the natural beauty of a translucent stone. They are a microcosm of the artistic achievements of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911).
The Thal collection of Chinese snuff bottles embodies a great variety of technical and artistics achievements, and in the present volume, the bottles are classified into six groups : porcelain, jade, quartz, stone and amber, glass, and inside-painted. The beauty of each individual bottle is described in detail, and the symbolic meaning of its decoration is discussed.
