The city of Harar for many centuries has been a major economic center and an urban Muslim pole on the road linking Arabia to Africa.
As capital of the Adal Sultanate in the 16th century and flourishing independent city-state from the 17th to the end of the 19th century, Harar developped a specific urban culture, unique in Ethiopia. Its narrow alleyways of varied colors, its courtyard houses with rooms organized in an amazing play of banquettes, its numerous mosques and tombs, its religious manuscripts of outstanding quality as well as its rich handicraft in basketry, all testify to the special character of the Harari culture, and to the pride of its inhabitants.
