Pierre Harter est né à Paris en 1928. Très tôt, il s'intéressa aux peuples et aux contrées tropicales.
En 1952, un voyage d'études en Afrique Noire occasionna un premier contact avec le Cameroun. Le vif intérêt se mua en passion, qui se concrétisa dans l'étude de la malarialogie, la médecine tropicale et la dermato-vénérologie, plus particulièrement orientée vers la pathologie exotique.
De 1956 à 1958, son incorporation le mena au Congo français, en République Centrafricaine, et lui fit retrouver plus longuement le Cameroun. Durant ce séjour, plus médical que militaire, il s'est enthousiasmé, en découvrant les pratiques coutumières locales et les objets qui s'y rapportaient. L'amitié des Fon lui fit connaître la signification profonde de ces sculptures, que trop souvent les collectionneurs se contentent de considérer pour leur simple intérêt plastique.
Une mission d'expertise au Sud-Vietnam occupa les deux années suivantes, et fut vouée à la réorganisation de la lutte contre la lèpre. Puis, de retour, il enseigna la léprologie à la Faculté de Médecine de Paris, publia Précis de Léprologie en 1968 et créa avec le Pr. F.P. Merklen le Certificat de Spécialité de Léprologie de Paris.
En 1966, une mission confiée par l'Association française pour les Recherches et études Camerounaises le fit encore se rendre sur le terrain.
Enfin, depuis 1970, de nombreux courts séjours le reconduisent en Afrique Noire plusieurs fois par année, non seulement au Cameroun, mais en d'autres territoires, notamment en Côte d'Ivoire, où il s'intéresse à l'organisation des masques chez les Goh et les Guéré.
Outre plusieurs articles, conférences sur le Grassland Camerounais, et participations à des ouvrages d'ensemble, ses travaux aboutissent à ce volume faisant le point de ses connaissances.

Pierre Harter was born in 1928 in Paris. Very Early, he was interested in people and regions of the tropical area. In 1952,a study trip in Sub-saharan Africa caused first contact with Cameroon. This vivid interest soon became a passion, then a reality in the study of Malariology, tropical medicin and dermato-venereology, especially turned towards exotic pathology.
From 1956 to 1958, his incorporation led him to French Congo, in Central African Republic, and allowed him to stay longer than before in Cameroon. Throughout this journey, more for medical purposes than military ones, he was really keen on the local customary practices and the artifacts related to them. His frienship with the Fon allowed him to discover the inner meaning of these sculptures, which were too often only considered for their formal qualities by collectors.
An appraisal mission in South-Vietnam took place during the two following years, and was dedicated to the reorganization of the struggle against leprosy. When he got back, he taught leprology at the University of Medicin in Paris. Then, he published a Handbook of leprosy in 1968 and created the P.r.F.P Merklen, a French certificate attesting of a specialization in the study of Leprosy.
in 1966, his assignment by the French Association for the Cameroonian Studies and Resarches lead him to go to the fieldwork again.
Finally, since 1970 many short journeys lead him to Sub-saharan Africa several times a year, obviously in Cameroon, but also in other areas, such as Ivory Coast where he finds some interest in the Goh and Guéré's masks organisation.
Apart from many articles, some conferences about the Cameroonian Grassland, and his participation to different general works, all of it lead to this volume, evaluating his entire knowledge.
